The New Castle Historical Society is an incorporated, non-profit membership organization, with 501 (C) 3 IRS status. Donations to the Society are therefore deductible. There is an 18-member Board of Directors, who oversee its management. Staff consists of an executive director, administrative director, and msueum guides. Nearly 150 volunteers work on various Society functions.

History
The Society was established in 1934 to save the Amstel House from an uncertain future. In 1946, the Delaware Society for the Preservation of Antiquities turned over the Dutch House to the Society for its second acquisition. Then in 1980, the Society reached an agreement with the Trustees of New Castle Common, to provide exhibits on town history at the Old Library Museum. Exhibits over the years have included such New Castle topics as education, a history of Italian-Americans, the wharf, shops and merchants in the town, African-American life, the Trustees of New Castle Common, and the architecture of the town.

The New Castle Historical Society celebrated 85 years of historic preservation in 2019!
